Second reading of “Is Art a Waste of Time”

After going through the effective altruism website, I realized that it’s easy to be persuaded while reading. The author of “Is Art a Waste of Time” obviously has different views about effective altruism that effective altruists, but it was eye-opening to me that I was persuaded almost completely to the authors opinions without realizing there was another side to the debate. During the second reading, I realized that Southan pinpointed times where effective altruists made him feel small or belittled. He did explain the goal of effective altruism, but I don’t feel as though he did them justice throughout his essay. They are doing the best they can, and have evidence to back up their claims that doing small things isn’t enough when you have the possibility and power to do more. While glossing the text, it helped me better understand meanings of small pieces to the essay. For example, I understood the passage better once I found out the meaning to the words humdrum and anti-apartheid. Both of these definitions helped me better understand the ideas and ethics of the EA group. Specifically, due to solely context clues, I assumed that antiapartheid with a movement that did not have good motives, but in reality that is not the case.
